European Bachelor’s Degree in Jewellery and Gemmology – Ministerial Decree 2024-417 of the Government of the Principality of Monaco
The programme lasts between one and two years and consists of four modules.
ADMISSION & ENROLMENTS OPEN
This unit aims to equip learners with skills in gem identification and expertise. It is structured into 6 levels of gemology. Each year comprises 3 levels of gemology. You will study in a laboratory and have access to a diverse gem collection of several thousand gems. This exceptional programme has benefited from the scientific direction of Professor Jean Claude Boulliard.
This unit aims to equip learners with skills in the professional environment. The courses are grouped into three sub-units:
• Resource geography and the geopolitics of diamonds.
• History of adornment, manufacturing techniques and methodology
• The professional sector of jewellery and precious stones, its economic, sociological, legal, and fiscal environment.
This unit aims to equip students with professional skills through two supervised projects, laboratory gemmology and a research dissertation.
• Scientific monitoring of gemstones, their imitations and treatments. You will analyse a further 300 gemstones thanks to access to laboratories outside of teaching hours. This is a key strength that attests to Monaco’s excellence.
• Sociological analysis of current developments in the jewellery and watchmaking sectors, and trends in the retail market.
This unit aims to provide learners with work-based learning in two forms:
• Visits to trade fairs and auction houses
• Several international field trips offering an immersive experience in a source country and a trading country. The international trip in the first year, supervised by a field gemmologist (see the page on trips), provides an opportunity to experience the intercultural aspects of the profession. The second-year trip offers the chance to experience international trade fairs.
Students who have completed a gemmology course at another institution can progress directly to the second year and complete the Bachelor’s degree in one year through the bridging programme.
Students who have completed higher education studies in another discipline can join the second year of the Bachelor's degree directly.
A supplementary course covering the first two levels of gemmology has been added to the refresher course.
Awarded upon completion of the first three levels of gemmology
Awarded on completion of the six gemmology levels
